Drought, heat and therefore heat wave are at the rendezvous in Burgundy for this month of July. With comparisons of years like 1976 and 2003, it is rather encouraging, 2015 could present itself as an exceptional vintage, with a very rapid evolution and ripening of the grapes in ideal sanitary conditions. Moreover, the winegrowers of Burgundy talk about harvests at the beginning of September, or even at the end of August, as in 2003 or 2009! But heat and drought are also sources of concern and sometimes negative consequences: – First of all this heat wave is very early, in general this level of drought is not found before August. If the vine does not generally suffer from the lack of water, there are undoubtedly limits not to be exceeded. In addition, young seedlings need to be watered or they will be roasted. – The fence is present in some places, especially in the Mâconnais and more generally in Southern Burgundy: part of the bunches will be roasted by the sun – Some diseases and harmful insects can more easily develop in dry conditions – Finally the operating conditions are very difficult under the scorching heat. Operators therefore often adapt schedules by starting very early, for example. 2015 is therefore a very promising vintage for the moment in Burgundy…But summer is not over!
