Recognized in 1971, the Mâconnais cru offers Chardonnays as varied as they are qualitative. An update on this singular terroir and on the celebrations to come. One AOC, two territories. Saint-Véran is one of the few "divided" appellations of Burgundy. Its two islets unfold on both sides of the pouilly-fuissés, another flagship terroir of the Mâconnais.
The two vintages of course have some characteristics in common. They produce only whites from Chardonnay, on mainly limestone soils. And like pouilly-fuissé, saint-véran has the opportunity to offer a balance between roundness and freshness, between fat and salinity, with frequent touches of white flowers and citrus. But the aromatic palette of Saint-Veran is wide, and we generally speak of "the" Saint-Verans. Depending on the terroir, these whites may present intense notes of white fleshed fruits , even exotic, a rich and creamy material, with, depending on the vintage, a hint of sweetness. We also find in the AOC – and especially its southern part – more austere wines, in delicacy and restraint. As you will have understood: it is rare that Chardonnay lovers do not find a Saint-Veran to their liking. This diversity has been classified as a village appellation – the second level of the hierarchy of Burgundy crus – since 1971, when the appellation decree was published in the official journal. Half a century that those responsible for the appellation intend to celebrate. First on social networks, with a series of videos presenting the appellation, designed in partnership with the Lyon comedian Sellig. Then on the spot, probably at the end of 2021. A date that will have to be watched closely: renowned for their sense of welcome, the winegrowers of the Mâconnais do not usually do things by halves.
