Romanée Conti appellation wine comes from a 1.8 hectare vineyard plot located in the town of Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is a monopoly, because the whole appellation is the property of a single estate, in this case the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which also has several other prestigious Grands Crus, but not necessarily in monopoly: Richebourg, la Tâche, romanée Saint-Vivant…
The estate has a special history, which can be found on the Romanée Conti website. Wine also has a special history, if only its name, from the Prince of Conti. If the 33 Grands Crus of Burgundy generally each have their own name from geographical references (Chambertin, Montrachet …), it is the only one that is partly derived from the name of a person … with the Corton Charlemagne! But now let's talk about its price: Romanée Conti is traded several thousand euros a bottle for recent vintages, much more for prestigious old vintages. It makes it one of the most expensive wines in the world, even the most expensive in the world… with Petrus. How can this be explained? By myth of course, scarcity and the speculation that follows. And yet, everything is done to avoid finding bottles of Romanée Conti on marketplaces: numbered bottles, sales and buyers listed and cataloged by the owners. If a buyer resells a bottle and it is known, he will be removed from the lists and will no longer be able to buy at the estate. The rarity doing, can of people have finally tasted this wine. How to know if he deserves his reputation .. and of course its price? Very hard to say… and it will of course depend on tastes. What is certain is that we are on an exceptional terroir worked for a very long time in an exceptional way: ploughing with horses, organic since the 80s (long before the label existed), incredible rigor in the selection of grapes, and watchmaker vinification. Probably a very great wine therefore, which we talk about (and write…) very often, but difficult to know if 3000 € minimum the bottle in a restaurant will have the same value in emotion and gustatory pleasure!
