2013 vintage in Burgundy: quality or quantity?
In terms of the quantity of grapes, everyone seems to agree: 2013 will not allow to raise the stocks of Burgundy wine. Even if not as weak as 2012 (and fortunately), the 2013 harvest will not be opulent, far from it. Especially since some appellations were again hard hit by the storms and hail of the summer: Pommard, Volnay, Monthélie, Beaune, Beaune 1ers Crus… Further down the Côte Chalonnaise, again some vines of Rully and Montagny also had to suffer damage related to bad weather. As far as quality is concerned, opinions differ…And for good reason, it seems very uneven. Whites sometimes seemed to suffer more from moisture. However, some plots are beautiful and the winegrowers who return to harvest have had very good surprises. On the reds overall magnificent grapes with a beautiful maturity, even if the levels of sweetness are not exceptional. The harvest is encouraging at the moment, with a start in good weather conditions. The weekend rain imposes one or two days of rest that will prepare the vats for the rest of the harvest.
