Chablis Wine Competition! A crucial moment for the region's wine sector.

Last weekend, the 35th Chablis wine competition , long awaited by winegrowers, took place. This took place on Saturday, January 23, 2021 in Beine, a small village located in the Yonne department and the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
This event is very important, it made it possible to highlight the 2019 and 2018 vintages of Chablis wines!

A special year…

Previously, this historic competition took place on the Chablis site of the interprofessional office of Burgundy wines. Given the new rules to be respected, the organizers had to adapt. Indeed, this took place in the Beauroy room (the 500 square meters of the room made it possible to respect the "nine square meters per juror"). During a morning, each taster was seated at an individual table due to the sanitary context, the atmosphere was less friendly compared to his habit but for the organizers it remained a success
Usually, hundreds of people from all over the world are present, as Benoît Droin (the person in charge of organizing the competition) explains: "Normally, there are 90 tasters, divided into three or four per table. This year, we halved the number of jurors and doubled the number of tables."
Similarly, in the face of uncertainty there has been no president appointed for this year. It was therefore a great victory to learn that the contest could take place despite everything.

27 wines were rewarded by the 46 jurors this year!

As usual neither producers nor traders were allowed to judge their work, this is the particularity of this competition.
Initially, the 46 jurors present (oenologists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, brokers, …) selected 20% of the 321 samples tasted. Among these , 27 Chablis wines were rewarded.
According to them, the three essential qualities to distinguish the different wines of the winegrowers are:
  • taste pleasure
  • the potential of wine
  • the quality of the product

During the service, the members of the Chablis Sommelier Association served the Appellations Petit Chablis, Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru vintage 2019 and Chablis Grand Cru vintage 2018.

The wines chosen will make it possible to revitalize the Yonne winery and bring greater visibility of Chablisian wines in the world.
